BEACON's Idelle Cooper featured in Current Biology

Idelle Cooper catching damselfies in HawaiiThe latest edition of Current Biology has a very positive and extensive overview of Idelle Cooper’s research on the adaptive significance of a color dimorphism within female “Beautiful Hawaiian damselflies.”  The overview is available here.   It contrasts Charles Darwin’s view that differences between the sexes are probably the result of sexual (social) selection, with Alfred Russell Wallace’s view that they are probably the result of differences in ecological (viability) selection, and marks Cooper’s research as a significant contribution to the Wallace perspective.  Cooper’s findings are consistent with Wallace’s view that, in this system at least, color differences represent local adaptations to differences in ecological selection by UV radiation.  The red pigment in these damselflies has anti-oxidant, UV protective properties.  Males, which defend sunny territories, and those females that have little shade in their environment are red.  Females that can shelter in the shade, at lower elevations, are green.  Color morph differences are genetically determined.   Cooper is collaborating with Tom Getty and Chris Klausmeier on a BEACON-funded project examining rapid evolution of the color dimorphism in response to global change that is expected to increase the intensity of UV radiation as a selective agent.

Today's BEACON group meeting

Our BEACON group meeting this week focuses on Thrust Group 2 – Behavior & Intelligence.
Speaker: Nicolas Chaumont

Title: Body-brain co-evolution in a 3D environment

Abstract:
I will present a platform that allows the co-evolution of morphology and behavior of creatures that interact in a three-dimensional environment that simulates the physics of rigid bodies. I will present several results that have been obtained with such a system to give an overview of its capabilities and to give the audience an idea of the type of research that can be done with it. We are looking in the near future to expand the use of this software to other researchers at BEACON who are interested in evolutionary questions related to behavior/cognition and population dynamics.

This world and its 3-D block creatures is inspired by Karl Sims classic work, but is far more flexible.  We think it will be a very compelling environment to use for BEACON research.

See you at 3:30 pm EST in the BEACON seminar room, followed by social hour at 4:30!

BEACON’s artist-in-residence, Adam Brown

Did you know that BEACON has an artist-in-residence? Adam Brown, Associate Professor of Electronic Art and Intermedia at MSU, is working on an art exhibit that will demonstrate the concept of evolution in action.

The project will be comprised of approximately 150 three-dimensional glowing, sensing and audio-producing sculptural robots. Robotic units will be mounted on the walls and be capable of communicating with each other (via wireless protocol) and with viewers that enter the intended installation space. The finished installation will have the feeling of a cave filled with synthetic bioluminescent life forms all competing for human interaction, thus the installation will act as a “living laboratory” as well as a focal point for BEACON visitors and researchers.

The interaction inherent in the Biolume installation will be governed by evolutionary methods and principles to evolve behaviors to better interact socially with humans. The installation will therefore act as a “laboratory” to explore applied evolution as it relates to human interaction.

You can learn more about Adam Brown and his art on his website.

First weekly BEACON meeting, Friday, October 29, 3:30-5:30 pm

Why? To hear about ongoing research, get updates on BEACON events and policies, eat some yummy food, and hang out with your BEACON friends.

Who? All BEACON members, including those outside of MSU! (more info to follow for those teleconferencing in)

What? The first hour (3:30-4:30) is time for announcements, research talks and discussion. This first meeting, a handful of students and postdocs will give 5-minute “lightning talks” to update us all on their research – including students from each partner university who will present remotely.

The second hour (4:30-5:30) will be a “social hour,” and we will serve refreshments.

When: Every Friday afternoon, beginning October 29, 3:30-5:30 Eastern time

Where: BEACON Seminar Room, 1455A BPS, Michigan State University. Our partner universities are encouraged to videoconference in!

Weekly plan:
The theme of the weekly meeting will go through a rotation: the first week will be BEACON-wide, and the next three weeks will rotate through the three BEACON Thrust Groups (Genomes, Networks & Evolvability; Behavior & Intelligence; Ecological Communities & Collective Dynamics). All BEACON members are invited every week, but even if you cannot make the research talk, please join us for the social hour anyway!

We need presenters for these meetings! If you are interested or want to nominate someone from your group, please email Danielle Whittaker or Charles Ofria. Also let us know if you prefer lightning talk or a full session.

BEACON Announces Endowed Chair Opening

BEACON and MSU’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering are pleased to announce that applications are now open for appointment as the Herman Koenig Endowed Chair. The Koenig Chair is aimed at strengthening the capabilities of the new BEACON Science and Technology Center recently funded at MSU by the National Science Foundation. BEACON studies Evolution in Action, joining biologists with computer scientists and engineers in pursuit of understanding of evolutionary dynamics occurring in nature and in silico, and of applying those principles in improving the design of engineered artifacts and systems. Evolutionary design and evolutionary robotics are particular targets.

The Chair has its tenure home in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Michigan State University, but the holder of the Chair may also hold a joint appointment in another department, as appropriate.

Interested parties should click here to see the full position statement.
